Volmiano: A Legacy of Towers, Olive Groves, and Timeless Oil

The Origins

Originally a watchtower, the Villa of Volmiano was expanded in the 15th century by the Cerretani family after their villa was destroyed by fire. The estate also includes Sorbetole, once owned by the Martelli and later acquired by the Medici, who incorporated it into the Caffaggiolo holdings. Cassandra Cerretani, the last descendant, enlarged the oratory and built a fountain that still graces the garden.

The Volmiano Complex

The Villa of Volmiano now rises around a sturdy medieval tower in a vast, unspoiled valley. Across the way stands Sorbetole, where olive oil has been produced since the Middle Ages. From the estate, one can still trace the defensive line of towers that once guarded the road between Florence and Bologna.

Volmiano Today

Today, Volmiano belongs to Vittoria Gondi Citernesi and her sons Gerardo and Lapo. Lapo continues the passion of his grandfather, Alfredo Citernesi, who devoted his life to olive growing and extra virgin olive oil. The estate is listed among the historic farms recognized as specialized olive groves by the Chamber of Commerce.
